How do I protect myself from a carjacker?

1. Situational awareness is your best friend. It doesn’t mean that you always are paranoid or living in “condition orange,” but it does mean that you know Col. Cooper’s color code of awareness and you live by it. Pay attention to your surroundings, and recognize that when you’re in public places you need to be more aware of your surroundings than when you’re in private. Also, remember that you must treat your car like “public” rather than a private space, and be aware accordingly. You can’t always see a carjacker coming from a long way away, but any notice helps.

2. Transitional spaces are places where we MUST be more careful of potential attack. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. Here, the barricade created a transitional space because of the choke point where the carjacker could ambush a potential victim. This carjacker just picked the wrong one!

3. Marksmanship matters! The old saying is quite true: you can’t miss fast enough to win a gunfight. As a self-defender you need to practice and train to put your first shot on target as fast as you can, but the key is to put as many shots on target as possible. By putting one of his carjackers down, this armed citizen was able to get away from danger and protect himself.

4. In the moment an armed robber attacks you, you must look for your opportunity to protect yourself. It is strongly possible that the moment of the attack is not that moment. You want to wait for the time that the armed robber is not focusing on you to act with decisiveness to protect yourself. Here the victim feigned compliance to buy time to get to his firearm, and looked for his opportunity and took it.

5. I can’t believe how often I have to say this, but LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS. When you get in the car, lock the doors. If your car automatically unlocks the doors when you put it in park or shut the engine off, read your owner’s manual and change that setting. Your car door is a great barrier to keep between you and any potential carjackings, so keep it locked for your safety! This man had his car door locked and it gave him the chance he needed. Lock your doors!

6. One of the best ways to protect yourself while you’re in the car is to simply drive off. The car can get away quickly if you are ready when a carjacker strikes, taking you out of danger. So be ready to drive off if you need to! Keep the car in drive until you’re ready to get out. Keep the engine running. If you’re aware of your surroundings you can escape a lot of problems. This man did a great job of protecting himself with a firearm, but usually the best answer is to drive off if possible.

Store Owner Shoots At Fleeing Robbers

How do I protect myself from robbers?

1. An important part of spiritual fitness is knowing what you are willing and able to fight for. As bearers of the image of God, humans are uniquely valuable and it is always acceptable to protect human life, whether your own or someone else’s. Property is something else entirely, and while in some states it is legal in some instances to protect property with deadly force it is not acceptable ethically for self-defenders to use deadly force to protect stuff. If a robber threatens your person to take your possessions, then by all means stop them from harming you and end the threat to your life. But if they are not a threat to life or limb, don’t become a perpetrator yourself by using deadly force without proper justification. This store owner endangered a lot of people in his neighborhood to try to stop these robbers after they left, and that was unwise.

2. Transitional spaces are places where we MUST be more careful of potential attack. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. Convenience stores are always transitional spaces, so if you work in one or visit one, be aware of your surroundings!

3. In any territorial or predatorial violence, the attacker gets to set the time and circumstances of the attack. They will almost always launch that attack from ambush, or as we like to call it in Kenpo, from “obscurity.” Surviving that ambush is one of the most important keys to successfully defending yourself. These robbers ambushed the store owner with speed and surprise, which isn’t uncommon.

4. Empty-handed skills are absolutely critical for self-defenders. First of all, more conflicts you will encounter as a self-defender will require empty-handed skills than will require firearms skills, simply because more self-defense encounters are physical than deadly. Second, since a firearm is a tool of last resort, self-defenders need to have non-lethal options that include empty-handed skills to protect themselves from likely incidents. Third, in the moment of the encounter you may not have the time to get to your gun before you can fight your way to it. This store owner needed those skills to protect himself from the robbers.

5. Keep your firearm on your person! Plenty of people keep a firearm stationed near them under the counter or on a desk, but in the moment of need you can’t ever be sure that you can get to it if it’s not on your person. Here the store owner had to retrieve the gun, which shows how useless a firearm can be against robbers if it’s not available in the moment.

6. We must never settle for being able to protect ourselves against a lone attacker because of how common multiple attacker engagements are. Rats travel in packs, so we must always be prepared to face multiple attackers!

How do I protect myself from a sucker punch?

1. You must accept that danger exists and that it can happen to you. This is the foundational core of spiritual fitness and the first step in taking proactive steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. If you live in a fantasyland that nothing bad can happen because nothing bad has happened in the past, you’re setting yourself up for a terrible letdown. Even in church, even if you’re a kindly old lady, evil can come your way. It’s a sad truth, but it is truth.

2. Transitional spaces are places where we MUST be more careful of potential attack. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. The narthex of a church is a transitional space because it is designed to get people in and out, and the number of people coming and going allows easier ambush. Be careful in transitional spaces.

3. In any territorial or predatorial violence, the attacker gets to set the time and circumstances of the attack. They will almost always launch that attack from ambush, or as we like to call it in Kenpo, from “obscurity.” Surviving that ambush is one of the most important keys to successfully defending yourself. This lady had little chance to weather that storm, but her story reminds us all that surviving the initial ambush is important.

4. Situational awareness is your best friend. It doesn’t mean that you always are paranoid or living in “condition orange,” but it does mean that you know Col. Cooper’s color code of awareness and you live by it. Pay attention to your surroundings, and recognize that when you’re in public places you need to be more aware of your surroundings than when you’re in private. Knowing when a door opens to take a quick look so that you see who is coming your way is an important skill to practice.

5. We must never settle for being able to protect ourselves against a lone attacker because of how common multiple attacker engagements are. Rats travel in packs, so we must always be prepared to face multiple attackers! It was the second attacker here who really hurt the woman. Her purse is replaceable, but the harm she endured at the hands of the second is where the real damage is. Always be ready for multiple attackers.

How do I protect myself from an armed robbery?

1. Transitional spaces are places where we MUST be more careful of potential attack. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. They will always get the first move, so you need to be ready with attitude, skills, and plan to protect yourself when in places where attacks are more likely to occur. This certainly applies during an armed robbery!

2. Even in a gunfight, empty-handed skills are important because many gunfights close to “extreme close quarters” or “bad breath distances.” Knowing how to protect your firearm from being taken, and how to win the fight that you’re actually in rather than the fight you want to be in, is crucial. This officer wanted to win a gunfight, but he ended up in a fight for his firearm that cost him his life. Empty-handed skills are indispensable.

3. Keep your firearm on your person! Plenty of people keep a firearm stationed near them under the counter or on a desk or in a bag, but in the moment of need during an armed robbery you can’t ever be sure that you can get to it if it’s not on your person and easily accessible. On-body carry is a real must if at all possible. Waist, shoulder, or chest/belly is preferable to ankle by a mile. Had this officer had his gun more readily

4. In the moment an armed robber attacks you, you must look for your opportunity to protect yourself. It is strongly possible that the moment of the attack is not that moment. You want to wait for the time that the armed robber is not focusing on you to act with decisiveness to protect yourself. The officer here didn’t realize there was an additional attacker nearby, and it cost him his life.

5. Spiritual fitness is an important part of Active Self Protection. You don’t often get any advance notice of the last day of your life, but we see over and over that self-defense isn’t a guarantee of winning every fight you might be placed in. You want to be at peace with God, because you’ll need that peace on the day that you meet Him. Since you can’t guarantee advanced notice, make peace today.

6. We must never settle for being able to protect ourselves against a lone attacker because of how common multiple attacker engagements are. Assassination Attempt Caught On Camera

Would you hesitate to tackle a man on crutches? I don’t think I have ever seen a stranger assassination attempt at Active Self Protection, but the method of handling it was absolutely spot on!

How do I protect myself from assassination?

1. Well, honestly, you can’t always protect yourself all the time. It’s just not possible, and even the greatest situational awareness can’t keep you from being ambushed. No one launches an assassination attempt where they think the intended victim has a chance to escape! Therefore, spiritual fitness is an important part of Active Self Protection. You don’t often get any advance notice of the last day of your life, but we see over and over that self-defense isn’t a guarantee of winning every fight you might be placed in. 4. The Five Ds are a tool that we use at ASP to organize our training and preparation for defending ourselves against an armed attacker when we are not armed ourselves. (or if we are armed but outdrawn such that we must deal with the problem with our hands) Deflect, Dominate, Distract, Disarm, Disable. We pursue them from first to last, in order, to give us the best chance of successfully defending ourselves against an armed opponent. Deflect their force multiplier, Dominate as much as possible (best is the whole person, second is the arm with the tool, last is the tool itself), Distract the attacker (usually using pain, redirection, movement, etc.), Disarm the attacker, and Disable the attacker.

5. The Bystander Effect is real. There were lots of people around here, but no one stepped in until one brave soul had the courage to act. You cannot count on anyone breaking the Bystander Effect to help you, especially if the attacker is armed and any help would be at a force deficit from it. Once you negate that advantage, the chance of others stepping in with you increases.

6. As one of my martial arts mentors, Skip Hancock, is fond of saying, the ground must be your friend and not your enemy. You must know how to fight on the ground and not panic if the fight goes to the ground! You must have skills from bottom position, from top position, and in the scramble. You must be able to regain your feet and fight from wherever you find yourself. Too many fights require this skill to ignore it!

How would you have stopped this carjacking? In many parts of the world carjacking is very common, but even in the US it’s not an uncommon occurrence. Making sure that you have Active Self Protection to protect yourself and your family is important!

Your car is a moving transitional space, especially at points of entry and exit. A carjacking is a great reminder that transitional spaces are high places of attack, because moving cars aren’t carjacked.

2. In any territorial or predatorial violence, the attacker gets to set the time and circumstances of the attack. They will almost always launch that attack from ambush, or as we like to call it in Kenpo, from “obscurity.” Surviving that ambush is one of the most important keys to successfully defending yourself.

Knowing each other well and communicating clearly will help you protect yourself from danger. This takes training and practice and commitment, but two partners working together present a formidable challenge to any attacker.

Even in a gunfight, empty-handed skills are important because many gunfights close to “extreme close quarters” or “bad breath distances.” Knowing how to disarm a gun-wielding attacker in an armed robbery, and how to win the fight that you’re actually in rather than the fight you want to be in, is crucial.

3. To defend against this kind of attack, you need emotional fitness. Emotional fitness is defined as the ability to internally represent a situation or predicament to yourself in such a way as to make you strong and able to successfully defend yourself against it. Repeated practice and thousands of reps of sparring and self-defense absolutely build your emotional fitness to be able to handle whatever comes your way.

4. The human body is designed to take a ridiculous amount of punishment and still function. You can shoot someone multiple times and they can still pose a deadly threat! Even mortally wounded people can continue to pose a threat for several seconds to even minutes after being shot, so don’t think for a moment that shooting someone will necessarily immediately incapacitate them. That is Hollywood myth. The victim shot the attacker FIVE TIMES in the chest, and he lived. Multiple shots on target may well be necessary to stop your attacker, so shoot until the threat stops.

7. Capacity matters. My rule of thumb is that I want a minimum of 5 rounds for each bad guy I might face, which accounts for 2 misses and 3 shots on target for each. (of course, you never want to miss…I am just accommodating me on my worst day) This bad guy’s gun, turned on him fired at least 5 hits and one miss (at the second attacker) before running empty. How much capacity is enough for you? That’s a personal decision, but for me and mine I like a gun with 15 or more if I can have it.

How do I protect myself from multiple attackers?

1. I think that the Rules of Stupid come into play here. The Rules of Stupid state that you should never (1) go to Stupid places, (2) with Stupid people, (3) at Stupid times, and (4) do Stupid things. You can usually get away with breaking one Rule of Stupid, but two or more really increase the odds of bad things happening. The bar is a bit of a stupid place. If you read the news story, it’s 1:50AM, a stupid time. (nothing good happens between midnight and 5AM) Getting into a verbal altercation against two people at once is perhaps doing Stupid things. So this guy broke a lot of the Rules. That doesn’t blame him for the attack, but it does give us a guideline to work from on how to protect ourselves.

2. A life of self-protection must be dedicated to avoidance, de-escalation, and escape whenever possible. You win 100% of the fights that you don’t get in, so make a commitment to de-escalate, escape, or evade any encounter you possibly can. Having good situational awareness will give you more time and opportunity to see problems coming and formulate a plan to stay away and protect yourself without danger to yourself or others. This is always our first choice as self-defenders.

Your car is a moving transitional space, and carjackings prove that again and again! The only time they’re not transitional spaces is when you’re in a garage with the door firmly closed. Otherwise, treat your car like it’s a target for you and yours.

Cars are meant to primarily be driven forward, so park in such a way that if you need to go, you can go the way the car was meant to go! Yes, that might mean parking a few spots further away. Yes, that might mean backing your car into a parking spot, but either you back in or you back out, so choose to back in if possible.

Even in a gunfight, empty-handed skills are important because many gunfights close to “extreme close quarters” or “bad breath distances.” Knowing how to protect your firearm from being taken, and how to win the fight that you’re actually in rather than the fight you want to be in, is crucial. You have to earn your draw in a close-in gunfight.

4. The human body is designed to take a ridiculous amount of punishment and still function. You can shoot someone multiple times and they can still pose a deadly threat! Even mortally wounded people can continue to pose a threat for several seconds to even minutes after being shot, so don’t think for a moment that shooting someone will necessarily immediately incapacitate them. That is Hollywood myth.

5. We must never settle for being able to protect ourselves against a lone attacker because of how common multiple attacker engagements are. Rats travel in packs, so we must always be prepared to face multiple attackers!

6. First aid skills are important. If you’re going to train and prepare to take a life to defend yourself, you should also have skills, training, and equipment to save life should you need to. Often that will not involve defensive encounters, and in a defensive encounter your primary responsibility is to yourself and your loved ones. This officer needed his IFAK on him with a hemostatic agent and potentially a tourniquet.
7. While we know that shooting with both hands on the gun is best for recoil control and putting fast, accurate shots on target, we also know that it’s not always possible to do. We must train and prepare to use our firearm with both our gun hand and our guard hand in case of injury or incapacitation. This officer only had one hand available!
