How do I protect my family from home invaders?

 

  1. You must accept that danger exists and that it can happen to you. This is the foundational core of spiritual fitness and the first step in taking proactive steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. If you live in a fantasyland that nothing bad can happen because nothing bad has happened in the past, you’re setting yourself up for a terrible letdown. Home invaders pick whichever house they think is easy to steal from or has something they want, so yours might be it.

 

  1. If you run from an attack, don’t just run AWAY from danger. Run TO something. Run TO the corner where you can fight one at a time. Run TO a store where a guard can help you. Run TO your house where you can lock the door. Run TO a place where you can better defend yourself from attack. Running FROM danger is great, but running TO safety is better! This girl didn’t really run FROM the home invaders, but rather TO the safety of the inside of her house. She locked the doors as well, and that was good stuff.

 

  1. We must each decide what is worth protecting. Life is always worth protecting because it is of inestimable worth; as unique bearers of the image of God, people are the most valuable “thing” imaginable. Property is something else, though. With property we always have to balance the benefit against the risk to ourselves and our families. Even where it’s legally allowed, you should consider whether it’s wise or prudent to defend your property, because doing so puts you at risk and not just the bad guy. This girl probably shouldn’t have come out of the house to begin with, shotgun or no. There were no people out there to protect, just property, and she wasn’t equipped to confront the danger that was out there. These home invaders could easily have killed her if they had the desire to. Therefore, teach your kids to batten down the hatches, arm up, call the cavalry, and don’t go exploring. (there’s something here about teenagers watching enough horror movies not to go wandering around in the dark, too, because that’s where you get murdered with a hatchet)

 

  1. Capacity matters. My rule of thumb is that I want a minimum of 5 rounds for each bad guy I might face, which accounts for 2 misses and 3 shots on target for each. (of course, you never want to miss…I am just accommodating me on my worst day) Here we see 2 or 3 home invaders, and that’s not the kind of situation I want a shotgun with 5 or 6 rounds for.

 

  1. As well-meaning as police officers are, they cannot protect you from danger. As the old adage says, “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away!” You—and ONLY you—can protect yourself from danger when it comes upon you. A police response time of 5 minutes is considered perfectly acceptable in most suburban departments, and times upwards of 30 minutes can be the norm in rural areas! You need to have the attitude, skills, and plan to protect yourself from harm because the police simply can’t. These home invaders weren’t going to be stopped by police, because police couldn’t get there in time.

 

  1. In the moment of need, the old saying goes that you will not rise to the occasion but fall to the level of your training. Usually, you’ll fall to the level of your WORST DAY in training. That means you want to train hard, train regularly, and make no excuses (to paraphrase one of my martial arts mentors, Skip Hancock) so that your worst day is good enough for the fight you’re in. This teen had a shotgun, but it didn’t look to me like she was particularly ready to use it if she had actually seen these home invaders. She did some good things like staying at distance to the door and running for safety when she got spooked.

Store Owner Shoots At Fleeing Robbers

How do I protect myself from robbers?

1. An important part of spiritual fitness is knowing what you are willing and able to fight for. As bearers of the image of God, humans are uniquely valuable and it is always acceptable to protect human life, whether your own or someone else’s. Property is something else entirely, and while in some states it is legal in some instances to protect property with deadly force it is not acceptable ethically for self-defenders to use deadly force to protect stuff. If a robber threatens your person to take your possessions, then by all means stop them from harming you and end the threat to your life. But if they are not a threat to life or limb, don’t become a perpetrator yourself by using deadly force without proper justification. This store owner endangered a lot of people in his neighborhood to try to stop these robbers after they left, and that was unwise.

2. Transitional spaces are places where we MUST be more careful of potential attack. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. Convenience stores are always transitional spaces, so if you work in one or visit one, be aware of your surroundings!

3. In any territorial or predatorial violence, the attacker gets to set the time and circumstances of the attack. They will almost always launch that attack from ambush, or as we like to call it in Kenpo, from “obscurity.” Surviving that ambush is one of the most important keys to successfully defending yourself. These robbers ambushed the store owner with speed and surprise, which isn’t uncommon.

4. Empty-handed skills are absolutely critical for self-defenders. First of all, more conflicts you will encounter as a self-defender will require empty-handed skills than will require firearms skills, simply because more self-defense encounters are physical than deadly. Second, since a firearm is a tool of last resort, self-defenders need to have non-lethal options that include empty-handed skills to protect themselves from likely incidents. Third, in the moment of the encounter you may not have the time to get to your gun before you can fight your way to it. This store owner needed those skills to protect himself from the robbers.

5. Keep your firearm on your person! Plenty of people keep a firearm stationed near them under the counter or on a desk, but in the moment of need you can’t ever be sure that you can get to it if it’s not on your person. Here the store owner had to retrieve the gun, which shows how useless a firearm can be against robbers if it’s not available in the moment.

6. We must never settle for being able to protect ourselves against a lone attacker because of how common multiple attacker engagements are. Rats travel in packs, so we must always be prepared to face multiple attackers!

How do I protect myself from an armed robbery?

1. Transitional spaces are places where we MUST be more careful of potential attack. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. They will always get the first move, so you need to be ready with attitude, skills, and plan to protect yourself when in places where attacks are more likely to occur. This certainly applies during an armed robbery!

2. Even in a gunfight, empty-handed skills are important because many gunfights close to “extreme close quarters” or “bad breath distances.” Knowing how to protect your firearm from being taken, and how to win the fight that you’re actually in rather than the fight you want to be in, is crucial. This officer wanted to win a gunfight, but he ended up in a fight for his firearm that cost him his life. Empty-handed skills are indispensable.

3. Keep your firearm on your person! Plenty of people keep a firearm stationed near them under the counter or on a desk or in a bag, but in the moment of need during an armed robbery you can’t ever be sure that you can get to it if it’s not on your person and easily accessible. On-body carry is a real must if at all possible. Waist, shoulder, or chest/belly is preferable to ankle by a mile. Had this officer had his gun more readily

4. In the moment an armed robber attacks you, you must look for your opportunity to protect yourself. It is strongly possible that the moment of the attack is not that moment. You want to wait for the time that the armed robber is not focusing on you to act with decisiveness to protect yourself. The officer here didn’t realize there was an additional attacker nearby, and it cost him his life.

5. Spiritual fitness is an important part of Active Self Protection. You don’t often get any advance notice of the last day of your life, but we see over and over that self-defense isn’t a guarantee of winning every fight you might be placed in. You want to be at peace with God, because you’ll need that peace on the day that you meet Him. Since you can’t guarantee advanced notice, make peace today.

6. We must never settle for being able to protect ourselves against a lone attacker because of how common multiple attacker engagements are. Rats travel in packs, so we must always be prepared to face multiple attackers! We must remember that there is always another unknown attacker, so being able to see other potential attackers is an important part of covering your ASP. It is not uncommon at all in an armed robbery to face multiple attackers, so

How do I protect myself from armed robbers?

1. Keep your firearm on your person! Plenty of people keep a firearm stationed near them under the counter or on a desk, but in the moment of need you can’t ever be sure that you can get to it if it’s not on your person. If you go read the news link, the armed robbers stole a firearm from the gym in the robbery, which means they HAD a gun in the place to protect themselves. But that does them NO good if they don’t have it in the moment of need.

2. In the moment armed robbers attack you, you must look for your opportunity to protect yourself. It is strongly possible that the moment of the attack is not that moment. You want to wait for the time that the armed robber is not focusing on you to act with decisiveness to protect yourself. When the man with the gun put it away, these armed robbers weren’t in any position to act with deadly force and that was the chance to defend.

3. You must establish some “bright lines” of when you’ll fight for your life, no matter the odds. Sometimes it might be best to give in, but there are some situations that are so dire that any odds are better than none. For me, being tied up is one of those bright lines. The second is being taken to a second location. In those situations I will fight to the death right where I am. You must establish your own “bright lines” of defense that you know it’s time to go right now.

How do I protect myself from a carjacking?

1. Never leave your keys in your car or the car running if you are away from it. Period, end of subject. The only time you can leave a car running is if your car is equipped with a remote starter that can leave it running while you take the keys and lock the car on the way out. And of course, never leave vulnerable people like children or elderly parents in a car without someone to protect them. If you’re all they have, take them with you. A carjacking with kids in the car is unthinkable.

2. A life of self-protection must be dedicated to avoidance, de-escalation, and escape whenever possible. You win 100% of the fights that you don’t get in, so make a commitment to de-escalate, escape, or evade any encounter you possibly can. Having good situational awareness will give you more time and opportunity to see problems coming and formulate a plan to stay away and protect yourself without danger to yourself or others. This is always our first choice as self-defenders.

3. Keep your firearm on your person! Plenty of people keep a firearm stationed near them under the counter or on a desk, but in the moment of need you can’t ever be sure that you can get to it if it’s not on your person. Imagine if this CCW holder had kept his gun in his glove box or map pocket. He would have been in even more trouble!

4. In a gunfight, movement is your friend. You must be ready not only to draw and fire, but to draw and fire while moving laterally, back, and diagonally. You simply will not stand still in a gunfight because it is against every instinct you have when in mortal danger! People who focus too much on stance or isosceles vs. Weaver forget this fact, but as self-defenders we must know that we will be moving. So practice and train movement on the draw and fire. This is a great reason to have airsoft trainers and practice draw and move in your dry-fire regimen as well.

5. The human body is designed to take a ridiculous amount of punishment and still function. You can shoot someone multiple times and they can still pose a deadly threat! Even mortally wounded people can continue to pose a threat for several seconds to even minutes after being shot, so don’t think for a moment that shooting someone will necessarily immediately incapacitate them. That is Hollywood myth. Both of these guys were shot and both ran a long way.

6. Transitional spaces are places where we MUST be more careful of potential attack. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. Convenience stores are always transitional spaces, so take the extra precautions not to make yourself an enticing victim.

6. First aid skills are important. If you’re going to train and prepare to take a life to defend yourself, you should also have skills, training, and equipment to save life should you need to. Often that will not involve defensive encounters, and in a defensive encounter your primary responsibility is to yourself and your loved ones. This officer needed his IFAK on him with a hemostatic agent and potentially a tourniquet.
7. While we know that shooting with both hands on the gun is best for recoil control and putting fast, accurate shots on target, we also know that it’s not always possible to do. We must train and prepare to use our firearm with both our gun hand and our guard hand in case of injury or incapacitation. This officer only had one hand available!

These men had their knives on their person so that when the armed robbers launched their attack, they were ready.

5. If you have a partner with you when you’re attacked (be it a LEO partner if you work on a team, or your spouse or martial artist buddy), you want to do everything you can to work as a team. Knowing each other well and communicating clearly will help you protect yourself from danger. This takes training and practice and commitment, but two partners working together present a formidable challenge to any attacker. These partners each dealt with a threat, even without much communication verbally. They knew instinctively that they had two armed robbers so they each went for one. Great teamwork!

How do I protect myself against an armed robber?

Mrs. Aldana owns a convenience store, and because people come in and out quickly it’s always a transitional space where an armed robber is more likely to strike. When you’re in transitional spaces, be sure to be extra alert!

In this case it worked out just fine against this armed robber, but if he had decided to come over the counter she might not have been so lucky. Keep your gun on you!

3. You must know the range of your force multiplier and the range of various force multipliers that might be used against you. Knives are short-range, fast moving force multipliers. Firearms are extremely long-range, fast moving force multipliers. In this instance, the counter kept the knife from being immediately deliverable and so as a defender you can know that you have the upper hand.

4. This incident required emotional fitness to be able to successfully defend yourself. Repeated practice and thousands of reps of sparring and self-defense absolutely build your emotional fitness to be able to handle whatever comes your way. Against An Armed Robber You Must Choose When To Protect Yourself

How do I protect myself against an armed robber?

1. Carry your firearm! The ladies in the first clip had very little ability to resist the armed robber because they had no force multiplier of their own. Even if they had one, if it was in their purse it would have been useless because they had their purses taken so quickly!

2. If you carry a firearm, you better know when to use it. The elderly gentleman chose not to use his, and he had a loaded shotgun pointed at him several times as compensation and was in grave danger for quite some time. If you carry a firearm you better know what your boundaries are and when you will use it to save your life and the lives of others.

3. In both clips, empty-handed skills would have been very important had the victims chose to defend themselves. In the first clip the ladies had chances when the armed robber put his firearm away to gather belongings. Had they had attitude, skills, and plan to deal with an armed robber, they could have won a fight even if they weren’t armed. The elderly gentleman needed to know some disarm techniques against a long gun, or at least some deflect and draw techniques, and the danger could have been over in an instant.

4. I am not knocking the elderly gentleman because we all get to make our own decisions and determine whether and when we use our defensive tools. As a reminder from the second clip, though: if you find in your heart that you can’t use a defensive firearm, don’t carry one. If deep down you know that you won’t use it in the moment of need, it’s not safe for you to have it. I don’t know this man’s heart, I don’t know if he made this decision based on the situation or his soul, but let’s all recognize the need to be willing to use deadly force if you carry a firearm.

Unaware Woman Walks Right Into A Mugging

This woman definitely wasn’t practicing Active Self Protection, but her mugging at least teaches us some important lessons to keep ourselves safe. How would you have protected yourself in her situation?

How do I protect myself from a mugging?

1. The main lesson in this video is situational awareness. When you’re in public you must be aware of your surroundings and do appropriate threat assessment of anyone else you encounter. This mugging was telegraphed a long way away, but she walked into it because she wasn’t doing any threat assessment and wasn’t aware of her surroundings at all. We must be better than that!

2. Your car becomes a transitional space every time you get in or out of it. Remember, a transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. Because we are often preoccupied when entering or exiting the vehicle, the car becomes an easy place for attack. When you’re approaching transitional spaces, you need to be MORE aware and ready for what might come your way.

3. This woman might have been able to see this mugging coming from as much as 25 yards away. The earlier you see the potential problem, the more options you have to protect yourself! Had she seen the potential mugging coming from 25 yards she could have stopped with her child and avoided it entirely. As she approached the vehicle and saw it, she could have responded definitively at about 7 yards and had lots of options to use her voice or get to her force multiplier. But when she saw it as he attacked her, she had almost no options at all.

4. You should practice hand-fighting with a purse on you or a bag slung if you ever sling a bag or purse, because the ability to throw your balance and posture off is significant and can really affect your ability to protect yourself.

5. Also, do NOT keep your firearm in your purse if it’s at all possible. If she had a firearm in her purse, it could not have helped her once the mugging started because she couldn’t have gotten to it. So keep your force multiplier on your person if at all possible!
