Caught on Camera: Tourists Attacked and Badly Beaten by Locals

Do you like to travel internationally as a tourist? I do, but I know that practicing Active Self Protection is an important part of my trip preparations. (my wife and I are actually going to Thailand next year!) Tourists need to think about where they’re going and what threats they may face as they prepare for their trip.

What does this video teach us about our self-defense as tourists?

 

  1. If you can win “the fight before the fight,” you win. You win that fight by minimizing your potential for being attacked in the first place! That means making smart decisions and living a life of awareness and readiness so that you don’t take unnecessary risks. Tourists must take precautions to know the local customs and to keep from getting so drunk that they offend the locals where they are. Simple as that. I am not blaming the tourists for starting this fracas, but they certainly could have avoided it if they were thinking.

 

  1. I think that the Rules of Stupid come into play here. The Rules of Stupid state that you should never (1) go to Stupid places, (2) with Stupid people, (3) at Stupid times, and (4) do Stupid things. You can usually get away with breaking one Rule of Stupid, but two or more really increase the odds of bad things happening. Getting drunk in a foreign country violates at least 2 rules of Stupid, because #4 is a given here (being drunk in public) and when you do that in a place you’re unfamiliar with, you combine it with #1. These tourists violated at least 2. Be smart as tourists and don’t violate the Rules.

 

  1. A life of self-protection must be dedicated to avoidance, de-escalation, and escape whenever possible. This is triply important for tourists! You win 100% of the fights that you don’t get in, so make a commitment to de-escalate, escape, or evade any encounter you possibly can. Having good situational awareness will give you more time and opportunity to see problems coming and formulate a plan to stay away and protect yourself without danger to yourself or others. This is always our first choice as self-defenders.

 

  1. The first pillar of lawful, moral self-defense is “innocence.” (get a nutshell here: http://get-asp.com/wbbp or the whole concept here: http://get-asp.com/1fqe ) Innocence requires that we not be the instigator of the fight and that we not be the aggressor or the perpetrator. In some states when we attempt to leave or run we can re-establish innocence in self-defense, but states differ on that. Regardless, getting into a fight is a poor basis for a self-defense claim later, so always live in such a way that innocence isn’t a problem for you. The news story says that the locals claim that one of the tourists started the physical altercation by slapping one of the locals. At the very least, the tourists pushed the locals some…that puts innocence in doubt as far as the physical altercation. That doesn’t justify what the locals did to the tourists, but it certainly does speak to their innocence as victims.

 

  1. These tourists really needed some emotional fitness. Emotional fitness is defined as the ability to internally represent a situation or predicament to yourself in such a way as to make you strong and able to successfully defend yourself against it. Here emotional fitness would have helped them understand that they were not in a situation where they could win a fight, and to swallow their ego, apologize, and carry on.

 

  1. As well-meaning as police officers are, they cannot protect you from danger. As the old adage says, “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away!” You—and ONLY you—can protect yourself from danger when it comes upon you. A police response time of 5 minutes is considered perfectly acceptable in most suburban departments, and times upwards of 30 minutes can be the norm in rural areas! You need to have the attitude, skills, and plan to protect yourself from harm because the police simply can’t. Thai culture is all about taking care of one another, and their police are known for fairly rapid response, but still these tourists were all taking naps before anyone could come to save them. You’re the agent of your own rescue.

Could you tell it was an airsoft pistol? I certainly couldn’t, and this clerk certainly had reason to believe he was being threatened with a real firearm. Your Active Self Protection better be ready to defend yourself in the moment from this kind of threat.

What does this attempted armed robbery teach us about protecting ourselves against an attack?

 

  1. Remember, at the end of a defensive encounter your goal is to get to safety and end the threat against you and your loved ones. Pursuing a fleeing bad guy for whatever reason is unwise because they very well may counter-ambush you or hurt you to make their escape. Once the threat ends, let the threat go and take action to make yourself safer.

 

  1. In a deadly force encounter, decisions of life and death will be made in the blink of an eye. On the range and in class we have time to consider and to think and to reset and to make multiple attempts, but when the balloon goes up in real life you’ve got fractions of seconds to decide what the best course of action is to protect yourself. The way to be better at decision making in the heat of the moment is training, specifically scenario training and force-on-force training that is designed to work on decision-making skills under stress. It’s offered all over the country, so get training!

 

  1. You must know your firearm, how it functions, and how you’ll respond with it in the moment of need. Pressure testing your firearms manipulations in force on force and other training classes is critical because you need to know that you can get your firearm in the fight and keep it in the fight! If your habits will inadvertently drop the magazine or your grip will cause the slide not to lock back on empty or other induce other malfunctions, you do NOT want to find that out when the balloon goes up.

 

  1. Keep your firearm on your person! Plenty of people keep a firearm stationed near them under the counter or on a desk, but in the moment of need you can’t ever be sure that you can get to it if it’s not on your person.

 

  1. The goal in any defensive firearms use is to stop the threat. Never draw a firearm if you’re not willing to use it, but if the presence of the firearm stops the threat, don’t pull the trigger! If the bad guy flees or surrenders, that’s a very successful defensive firearm use and you’ve met the goal.

Defender Kills Innocent Bystander While Shooting at Fleeing Thieves

This is one of the major reasons that I tell you NOT to pursue fleeing suspects, even if what they’ve taken is valuable. The cost to this man of not practicing Active Self Protection will be FAR higher than the $50,000 he lost!

What does this victim teach us about protecting ourselves from an attack?

 

  1. One of the five pillars of lawful, moral self-defense is “imminence,” (get a nutshell here: http://get-asp.com/wbbp or the whole concept here: http://get-asp.com/1fqe ). Imminence means the threat is happening RIGHT NOW, that it’s neither too late nor too early for you to defend yourself! The standard of imminence is seen as a triad of ability, opportunity, and jeopardy (also known as the AOJ triad, which is explained here: http://get-asp.com/pm3k in some detail). In this case the defender fails the test of imminence because he is under no personal threat. The threat has passed as the thieves flee, and so he doesn’t have a strong case for defending himself here.

 

  1. In almost all instances and jurisdictions you cannot use deadly physical force to defend property. (Texas is the rare exception to this, but recognize that TPC 9.42 has some significant limitations) Even in cases where you COULD use deadly physical force to defend property, it’s worth considering whether it is WISE to use deadly physical force because of the risk to yourself and to any bystanders that could come because you choose to continue to engage the criminal(s). That doesn’t usually apply to occupied buildings and cars because of the inherent value of the people inside of them, and the defense of property does vary considerably from state to state as to what’s acceptable. Please consult with a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction to be sure that you understand the laws of your area!

 

  1. An important part of spiritual fitness is knowing what you are willing and able to fight for. As bearers of the image of God, humans are uniquely valuable and it is always acceptable to protect human life, whether your own or someone else’s. Property is something else entirely, and while in some states it is legal in some instances to protect property with deadly force it is not acceptable ethically for self-defenders to use deadly force to protect stuff. If a robber threatens your person to take your possessions, then by all means stop them from harming you and end the threat to your life. But if they are not a threat to life or limb, don’t become a perpetrator yourself by using deadly force without proper justification.

 

  1. In a deadly force encounter, decisions of life and death will be made in the blink of an eye.   1. The Bystander Effect is real. There were lots of people around here, but no one stepped in. You cannot count on anyone breaking the Bystander Effect to help you, especially if the attacker is armed and any help would be at a force deficit from it. Usually the best way to break the Bystander Effect is to have a force multiplication advantage, which is a great reason to keep your force multiplier on you at all times.

 

  1. First aid skills are important. If you’re going to train and prepare to take a life to defend yourself, you should also have skills, training, and equipment to save life should you need to. (I carry an individual first aid kit at a minimum: http://amzn.to/1Or4yVz ) Often that will not involve defensive encounters, and in a defensive encounter your primary responsibility is to yourself and your loved ones.

 

  1. Marksmanship is critical in a gunfight, because you are responsible for every round that leaves the muzzle of your firearm. You must recognize that you are accountable for any errant rounds that leave your gun and the damage they cause.

 

  1. The rules of firearm safety apply whether you’re training or fighting for your life. One of the most difficult to follow in a real life gunfight is Colonel Cooper’s Rule #4: be sure of your target and what lies beyond it. It is exceedingly difficult to do, but self-defenders must stay aware of what is behind their threat so that they take minimal risks to innocents when defending themselves.

Man Lucky to Escape Murder Attempt

Would you have run or tried to take the gun from the perp here? I think that Active Self Protection allows for either response when either response is available, and it looks like it worked in this instance!

What does this murder attempt teach us about protecting ourselves from harm?

 

 

  1. Do not stay in the danger zone if you can possibly help it. So many times people get decision paralysis and freeze, but you cannot stay in a place where a deadly threat exists! Either act to leave the area, or act to protect yourself. Every second you give an attacker is another opportunity they have to do you and yours harm, so don’t allow that. If you can, get out of there immediately. If you can’t, then look for your opportunity to ensure your own safety by whatever means necessary. Before your Kung Fu, and before your Gun Fu, you should consider whether your best defense is Run Fu!

 

  1. If you can win “the fight before the fight,” you win. You win that fight by minimizing your potential for being attacked in the first place! That means making smart decisions and living a life of awareness and readiness so that you don’t take unnecessary risks. It means not being a drug dealer (as the original link above says about the intended victim here) so that guys aren’t after you for your corner and stash.

 

  1. If you run from an attack, don’t just run AWAY from danger. Run TO something. Run TO the corner where you can fight one at a time. Run TO a store where a guard can help you. Run TO your house where you can lock the door. Run TO a place where you can better defend yourself from attack. Running FROM danger is great, but running TO safety is better!

 

  1. Keep your firearm on your person! Plenty of people keep a firearm stationed near them under the counter or on a desk, but in the moment of need you can’t ever be sure that you can get to it if it’s not on your person. This guy certainly wishes he had something with him that day!

Argument Escalates to Deadly Force

You win 100% of the fights you don’t get it, friends. Practicing Active Self Protection means not allowing your ego to get you into deadly force encounters, because even when you win the fight the cost is high financially, emotionally, and socially (among others). Learn the lessons here!

What does this argument teach us about winning a fight?

 

  1. If you can win “the fight before the fight,” you win. You win that fight by minimizing your potential for being attacked in the first place! That means making smart decisions and living a life of awareness and readiness so that you don’t take unnecessary risks. That readiness means knowing how to control your ego and stay out of fights. Never allow the fact that you carry a firearm put you in a place to make foolish decisions that endanger yourself, your family, or your future in order to tell some punk what he should know.

 

  1. If you know there might be danger around, you cannot stand there flat-footed with your hands at your side. That’s a great way to die. Instead, if you think danger might be coming but not imminent, get your hands up protecting your head, neck, and chest. I do this by tucking one hand under the other elbow, and the free hand on my chin as if I were in deep contemplation. Others do it using the “interview position” with both hands as if they’re holding a pad and pen. Getting your hands up shaves split seconds off of your reaction time, but that might make the difference between life and death if you can prepare.

 

  1. A life of self-protection must be dedicated to avoidance, de-escalation, and escape whenever possible. You win 100% of the fights that you don’t get in, so make a commitment to de-escalate, escape, or evade any encounter you possibly can. Having good situational awareness will give you more time and opportunity to see problems coming and formulate a plan to stay away and protect yourself without danger to yourself or others.   1. To defend against this kind of attack, you need emotional fitness. Emotional fitness is defined as the ability to internally represent a situation or predicament to yourself in such a way as to make you strong and able to successfully defend yourself against it. Repeated practice and thousands of reps of sparring and self-defense absolutely build your emotional fitness to be able to handle whatever comes your way. In this case emotional fitness would have allowed the clerk to maintain his composure and not get baited into opening the door.

It can also be used against you in a fight, so you should know how to defend yourself if you’re sprayed! Take a good course on pepper spray and how to employ it, and as part of that course take a dose yourself so that you know the effect it will have on you and how to fight through it to continue to protect yourself. It might have been a very good tool for this encounter rather than a firearm, which could have gotten this man in a lot of trouble.

Customer Takes Down Robbery Suspect in Pharmacy

Would you have intervened if you were the customer? I think it’s important to our Active Self Protection not only to have attitude and skills, but also a PLAN for when we will intervene in a third-party circumstance. This customer took decisive action in this robbery, and he did well.

What do these attacks teach us about protecting ourselves from robbery?

 

  1. Every person gets to decide who they are willing to protect. For some, their “flock” is only themselves and their immediate family. That’s an acceptable answer. For others, they are willing to protect their friends, coworkers, and extended family. For a few, it might mean being willing to protect anyone who is weak, powerless, and in need. Each of us must decide the size of our flock and have that decision firmly in mind when it is time to act. In this incident the customer might have known the pharmacy worker, so he might have been protecting a loved one from the robbery; I am not sure! If not, it’s worth considering the risk to yourself and your loved ones before stepping in, so at least you know the risks and benefits ahead of time.

 

  1. If you have spiritual fitness by knowing what you’re willing to fight for and that you’re willing and ready to win the fight no matter what, you place yourself way ahead of most attackers. Attackers are looking for victims and not looking for fights, so many times when an intended victim puts up a significant fight they will disengage and find other prey. This makes sense even in the animal kingdom where we often see an apex predator disengage from feisty prey for fear of injury. Being ready to defend yourself is a key in self-defense because that defense will often cause the bad guy to run. This is part of why spiritual fitness is so important to self-defense.

 

  1. Empty-handed skills are absolutely critical for self-defenders. First of all, more conflicts you will encounter as a self-defender will require empty-handed skills than will require firearms skills, simply because more self-defense encounters are physical than deadly. Second, since a firearm is a tool of last resort, self-defenders need to have non-lethal options that include empty-handed skills to protect themselves from likely incidents. Third, in the moment of the encounter you may not have the time to get to your gun before you can fight your way to it.

 

  1. Fights are physically demanding. Sure, a pure gunfight might last 10 seconds and not place a huge burden on you physically, but the vast majority of encounters we see here at ASP involve physical self-defense as well. Getting into a honest-to-goodness fight with someone is incredibly physically demanding, so being physically fit is an important part of maximizing your chances to protect yourself. Fit people are harder to beat and harder to kill!

 

  1. I think this incident would have been a great time to employ a good pepper spray rather than going hands-on. What does this revenge rundown teach self-defenders about lawful self-defense?

Would an objective, reasonable person do what you did in the moment? A good test of whether your actions are reasonable is whether you did them to stop the threat or to punish someone (Charles Humes calls it “The Punisher Test”: https://get-asp.com/nybt it’s a good comparison)

 

  1. We must each decide what is worth protecting. Life is always worth protecting because it is of inestimable worth; as unique bearers of the image of God, people are the most valuable “thing” imaginable. Property is something else, though. With property we always have to balance the benefit against the risk to ourselves and our families. Even where it’s legally allowed, you should consider whether it’s wise or prudent to defend your property, because doing so puts you at risk and not just the bad guy.

 

  1. If you can win “the fight before the fight,” you win. You win that fight by minimizing your potential for being attacked in the first place! That means making smart decisions and living a life of awareness and readiness so that you don’t take unnecessary risks. It means knowing that Craigslist transactions are inherently dangerous, and therefore doing them in public, safe places like police stations or the mall. It means not allowing strangers to get into your car.

 

  1. The human body is designed to take a ridiculous amount of punishment and still function. You can run someone over with your car and they can still pose a deadly threat! Even mortally wounded people can continue to pose a threat for several seconds to even minutes after being injured, so don’t think for a moment that injuring someone will necessarily immediately incapacitate them. That is Hollywood myth.

 

  1. Think about this from the perspective of your costs. Okay, the guy won’t steal from people again probably. Great. But to get your $190 shoes back, you did $4000 in damage to your car that your insurance company won’t cover. So don’t say it’s about protecting your livelihood when you just threw $3800 down the drain! Then, you have to pay for the impound on the car and your stuff, which will be hundreds more. Then you have to hire an attorney for $450+ an hour to defend you in court, so that’ll be MINIMUM $5000 if the DA is your best friend. It could be $100,000. At the end, even if you get a jury that decides on jury nullification (because if not he’s going to be behind bars) you get to lose your house for that $190. And if you don’t get everything 100% right, you spend 5-10 years behind bars, lose your ability to love your family, and your livelihood. Stupid, isn’t it?

  1. Whether you’re LEO or CCW, you need to know what force options you have available for your self-defense and when to abandon one and move to another. (“force options” are a better model than the older “force continuum” model) You need to know when your pepper spray is the best option, or when to abandon it (or the TASER) in favor of your firearm in a split second decision. The best way, of course, to learn and embed these options in your mind is to train in force on force scenarios with the options and then respond to the situations appropriately.
